Seattle arrivals

Sea-Tac is south of the city and Bellevue is east across a lake. Which of those you are going to decides the entire journey. Seattle-Tacoma International sits about fourteen miles south of downtown, and the run in is up the I-5 through some of the most reliably congested road in the region. For anyone heading to Bellevue or Redmond the run is on I-405 instead, which has a peak of its own. We track arrivals by flight number, meet inside the terminal by default and hold through customs rather than starting a clock against a queue we cannot see.

One terminal, several arrival points

Sea-Tac operates from a single terminal, which makes it simpler than most large airports, but the baggage claim and the ground transportation areas are spread along a long building and the international arrivals hall sits apart from the domestic ones. We meet inside with your name rather than asking you to find a vehicle at the kerb.

  • Single terminal
  • Long building
  • Named meet inside

The ground transportation garage

For a meet-and-greet, Sea-Tac has chauffeured cars wait in designated limousine stalls on the third floor of the parking garage, which is well organised once you know it and confusing the first time. Your chauffeur walks you there rather than describing it over the phone, and the vehicle is waiting rather than circling. If you would rather go straight out, permitted cars can also collect you at the lower-level Arrival Drive curb.

  • Designated garage area
  • Walked, not described

International arrivals and the customs hold

International flights clear at the south end and the queue varies by an hour depending on the arrival bank. We hold through customs rather than running a clock against something outside your control. Asian long-haul arrivals in particular bunch heavily in the afternoon.

Seattle departures, I-5 and I-405

The I-5 is the constraint, not the distance

Fourteen miles sounds like twenty minutes and frequently is not. The I-5 through the south of the city carries more than it was built for and fails predictably at peak, with no alternative that genuinely rescues it. We quote the honest number and build the allowance in rather than being optimistic and apologising.

  • I-5 congestion
  • No real alternative
  • Honest allowances

Eastside departures run on I-405

From Bellevue, Redmond or Kirkland the normal run to Sea-Tac is south on I-405 and then SR 518, with no lake crossing at all. I-405 has its own peak, and on a bad day the fallback is I-90 across the lake and I-5 south. Staying on the Eastside and flying from Sea-Tac means planning around I-405 rather than around the mileage.

  • I-405 south
  • SR 518
  • I-90 as fallback

From the Seattle districts to Sea-Tac

Door to kerb, ordinary conditions. The Eastside figures run on I-405, which is the part that varies rather than the distance.

The city is long and narrow, the airport is south of it, and anything between the Eastside and the city has to cross Lake Washington on one of two bridges.

How Seattle airport transfers are priced

Every Sea-Tac route is quoted per route and confirmed in writing before you travel, with no surge pricing at any hour.

Boeing Field and Paine Field are covered as well, and for some travellers Paine Field in Everett is a far easier arrival than Sea-Tac. We will say so when the destination makes it obvious.
