The San Francisco hotels we run to

A San Francisco hotel address tells you the street. It does not tell you how steep it is, or which direction a vehicle can actually leave in. The city’s executive hotels sit on Nob Hill, around Union Square and along the SoMa and waterfront edge, with the peninsula houses serving the valley business. Hills and one-way streets shape every pickup here more than traffic does: several of these properties can only sensibly be approached from one direction, and a vehicle that arrives from the other spends five minutes going around. We plan the approach rather than discovering it.

These are the addresses people actually give a chauffeur in San Francisco. A great deal of Bay Area work never touches the city at all, which is why the Peninsula names matter as much as the city ones.

Where visiting executives stay. The Union Square and Nob Hill houses take the city business, while the Peninsula properties serve the venture and technology traffic that has no reason to come north.

Four Seasons San Francisco

Market Street

On Market in the middle of the busiest stretch of the city, with the hotel entrance set back from the street itself. Market has restricted vehicle access along much of its length, which is the detail that catches out first-time drivers. We use the approach that is actually permitted.

The Ritz-Carlton San Francisco

Nob Hill

On Stockton on the side of Nob Hill, with a forecourt at the top of a genuinely steep approach. Arriving from the wrong direction means a climb the vehicle did not need. The forecourt itself is generous and handles a busy checkout well.

  • Directional
  • Generous forecourt

Fairmont San Francisco

Nob Hill

At the summit of Nob Hill on California Street, with the cable car running past the door and a circular drive that works properly. The hill is the journey from almost anywhere, and in wet weather the cable car tracks are worth respecting. A grand and straightforward pickup.

The St. Regis San Francisco

SoMa

On Third Street in SoMa opposite the museum, with a proper covered entrance and good access from the south. Well placed for Moscone, which makes it a convention favourite and busy in show weeks. Closer to SFO than the Nob Hill houses by a useful margin.

1 Hotel San Francisco

Embarcadero

On the Embarcadero by the waterfront, with straightforward access along a road that moves well outside ballgame traffic. Oracle Park nights fill the southern Embarcadero completely, and we plan around the fixture list rather than the clock.

  • Good access

Palace Hotel

Financial District

On New Montgomery at Market, a grand old house with a covered carriage entrance that still does exactly what it was built for. One of the more comfortable Financial District pickups. Market Street access rules apply to the approach and we work within them.

Hotel Nikko

Union Square

On Mason just off Union Square, with a porte-cochere set off the street. The square itself is ringed by one-ways and fills with shopping traffic through the afternoon, so the direction of approach matters here as much as the timing.

  • Off Union Square
  • One-way grid
  • Afternoon congestion

Rosewood Sand Hill

Menlo Park

On Sand Hill Road itself, which puts guests inside the venture district rather than commuting into it. Low-rise with generous grounds and easy vehicle access — a completely different proposition from a city hotel. A real drive from SFO and minutes from San Carlos.

  • On Sand Hill Road
  • Easy access
  • Near San Carlos

Nobu Hotel Palo Alto

Palo Alto

In downtown Palo Alto a short walk from University Avenue, on streets that are narrow and busy in the evening but perfectly workable. Close to Stanford and to the valley campuses, and about as central as a peninsula base gets.

  • Downtown Palo Alto
  • Near Stanford

Four Seasons Silicon Valley

East Palo Alto

Just off the 101 at East Palo Alto, which makes it the easiest of the peninsula houses to reach and to leave — the freeway is right there. Purpose-built access. A sensible base for a week of valley meetings without a city commute at either end.

  • Beside the 101

From the San Francisco hotel districts to the airports

Door to kerb, ordinary conditions. The peninsula houses are much closer to SFO and San Jose than the city ones, which is frequently the deciding factor.

How San Francisco hotel transfers are priced

Hotel transfers are quoted per route and confirmed in writing before you travel, with no surge pricing at any hour. Hourly hire suits a day that begins and ends at the hotel with stops between, which given peninsula parking is frequently the cheaper option as well.

If you are choosing between a city hotel and a peninsula one and your meetings are in the valley, the peninsula will save you two hours a day in the car. We will say so plainly.
