The Washington DC hotels we run to

Several of these hotels sit within two blocks of the White House, which is both why people stay in them and why the street outside can close without warning. Washington’s executive hotels cluster downtown near the White House, along Pennsylvania Avenue and in Georgetown. Most have proper forecourts and staff entirely used to chauffeured and credentialed arrivals. The complication here is not the buildings but the streets around them: closures, motorcades and security perimeters are ordinary. We agree a fallback pickup point at booking for every one of these addresses, because some days the front door is not reachable.

These are the addresses people actually give a chauffeur in Washington. In a city where a motorcade can close a block without notice, knowing the alternate approach to a building is worth more than the vehicle is.

Where visiting executives stay. The downtown and Georgetown houses take most of the corporate, legal and diplomatic traffic, with the Northern Virginia properties serving the Dulles corridor business that never crosses the river.

The Hay-Adams

Lafayette Square

On Lafayette Square facing the White House, which makes it one of the most closure-prone addresses in the city. The hotel handles this constantly and well. We agree a fallback point on 16th or H Street at booking, because on some mornings the square simply is not reachable by vehicle.

  • Faces the White House
  • Closure-prone
  • Fallback agreed

The Jefferson

Downtown

On 16th Street a few blocks north of the White House, small and discreet with an entrance that works well. Far enough from the immediate perimeter to be reliable most days. A comfortable base for anyone with business downtown and on the Hill.

  • 16th Street
  • Discreet entrance
  • Reliably reachable

Four Seasons Washington DC

Georgetown

At the Georgetown end of Pennsylvania Avenue with a proper forecourt set off the road. Georgetown’s streets are narrow, cobbled in places and genuinely difficult at weekends, but the hotel itself sits at the easy edge of the district rather than in the middle of it.

  • Edge of Georgetown
  • Proper forecourt
  • Avoids the cobbles

Willard InterContinental

Pennsylvania Avenue

On Pennsylvania Avenue two blocks from the White House, with a covered entrance and a long history of handling credentialed arrivals. The avenue outside is a parade and motorcade route, so the F Street side is frequently the working answer and we plan for it.

  • Pennsylvania Avenue
  • Covered entrance
  • F Street fallback

Waldorf Astoria Washington DC

Pennsylvania Avenue

In the Old Post Office building on Pennsylvania Avenue, a large site with its own vehicle access off the side street rather than the avenue. That access is the reason it works on days when the avenue does not. Central for both downtown and the Hill.

  • Side-street access
  • Works on closure days

The St. Regis Washington

Downtown

On K Street at 16th, a block from Lafayette Square and close enough to the perimeter to be affected on a busy day. The entrance is on 16th and handles vehicles comfortably. Central for the lobbying and association business that fills K Street.

  • K Street
  • 16th Street entrance
  • Near the perimeter

Riggs Washington DC

Penn Quarter

In the old Riggs Bank building in Penn Quarter, a busy district of restaurants and theatres that fills in the evening. The entrance is on a narrower street and a brief stop works fine outside the dinner rush. Close to Capital One Arena, which affects the surrounding blocks on event nights.

  • Penn Quarter
  • Narrow street
  • Arena-night effect

Rosewood Georgetown

Georgetown

On the canal in Georgetown, down among the narrowest streets in the city, where a vehicle genuinely struggles at weekends. The hotel manages arrivals carefully. We approach from the M Street side rather than through the canal streets and agree the point beforehand.

  • Canal-side
  • Very narrow streets
  • M Street approach

Salamander Washington DC

Southwest Waterfront

On the Southwest Waterfront near the Wharf, away from the downtown perimeter entirely and consequently one of the more reliable addresses here. Good vehicle access. Closer to Reagan National than the downtown houses, which makes an early departure noticeably easier.

  • Away from the perimeter
  • Closest to DCA

The Watergate Hotel

Foggy Bottom

In Foggy Bottom beside the Kennedy Center, with a curved approach and its own entrance off Virginia Avenue. Performance nights next door fill the surrounding roads, so a pickup timed against a curtain is a pickup that will wait. Otherwise a straightforward and quick address to work.

  • Beside the Kennedy Center
  • Curtain-time congestion

From the Washington DC hotel districts to the airports

Door to kerb, ordinary conditions and no closures. Every one of these is short to National and long to Dulles, which is the whole planning problem in this city.

How Washington DC hotel transfers are priced

Hotel transfers are quoted per route and confirmed in writing before you travel, with no surge pricing at any hour. Hourly hire suits a day that starts and ends at the hotel with several stops between, which given how often this city closes a street is the safer structure as well as the cheaper one.

On an inauguration, a state visit or a major demonstration we plan the day rather than quoting it, and we will tell you plainly when an address cannot be reached at the time you have asked for.
