The three Washington DC airports

Three airports in three jurisdictions. National is minutes away, Dulles is a different county and BWI is a different state. Washington is served by three airports whose ground times have almost nothing in common. Reagan National sits across the river and is among the shortest airport runs in the country; Dulles is twenty-six miles out in Virginia; BWI is in Maryland and closer to Baltimore than to the capital. Booking the cheapest fare into the wrong one routinely costs more in ground time than it saved. We track every arrival by flight number and meet inside the terminal.

Reagan National (DCA)

Across the Potomac in Arlington and closer to downtown than almost any major airport is to its city. Two terminals, compact, with an arrivals level that works properly. For anyone whose business is on the Hill, downtown or in Arlington, National is worth paying for — the ground time saved against Dulles is regularly forty minutes each way.

  • Closest by far
  • Terminals 1 & 2
  • Worth the fare difference

Washington Dulles (IAD)

Twenty-six miles west in Virginia and the international gateway for the region. The main terminal and the midfield concourses are connected by a train, so the walk from gate to kerb is longer than people plan for. International arrivals clear here, and we hold through customs rather than running a clock against a queue. Well placed for the Virginia technology corridor.

  • International gateway
  • Long gate-to-kerb
  • Customs hold
  • Virginia corridor

Baltimore/Washington (BWI)

In Maryland, about thirty-two miles north-east, and frequently the cheapest fare into the region. From BWI to downtown Washington is a genuine long transfer on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, which carries its own rush hour. For anyone working in Maryland or north of the city it can be the right choice; for a Georgetown meeting it rarely is.

Motorcades, closures and secure zones

Washington closes roads with little notice and reopens them on its own schedule. Motorcade movements, demonstrations, state visits and security perimeters are ordinary conditions here rather than exceptions. Chauffeurs plan alternates before setting off and we build genuine allowance into airport departures rather than quoting the clear-road number.

  • Unannounced closures
  • Alternates planned
  • Real allowance

Delays, diversions and early landings

We work from the tail number, so an early landing is met early and a diversion is re-planned before you have cleared the aircraft. Regional weather commonly shifts traffic between these three airports, and because we cover all of them a diversion does not mean starting the booking again.

Door to kerb, ordinary conditions and no closures. The difference between National and Dulles is the single most useful number on this page.

The figures below are ordinary conditions, and ordinary conditions in Washington do not include a motorcade.

How Washington DC airport transfers are priced

Every airport route is quoted per route and confirmed in writing before you travel, with no surge pricing at any hour. Dulles and BWI are quoted as long transfers because that is what they are.

If the flights are not booked yet, tell us where the meetings are. A fare into BWI that looks cheaper than National is frequently not, once two hours of ground time are counted honestly.
