The Houston venues we run to
The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo runs for three weeks and moves more people than anything else in the state. It is planned for, not reacted to. Houston’s venues mostly have proper parking and real road access, which makes them easier to work than the equivalent venues in older cities. The exception is scale: NRG on a Rodeo night or a football Sunday is one of the largest single movements anywhere. We stage clear of the site and come forward on a call rather than sitting in a queue that has not started moving.
Conventions, arenas and stadiums. The downtown venues sit within a few blocks of each other, so a convention and a game on the same day affects every approach to the east side of downtown at once.
Culture, dining and the region. The Museum District and the Montrose restaurant rooms take most evening work, and the coast and Hill Country are regular long-distance runs.
George R. Brown Convention Center
Downtown
A very large floor on the eastern side of downtown with hotels attached and its own parking structures. Access is good by convention-centre standards. During the biggest shows the downtown streets around it carry far more than usual, and we time pickups against the hall closing rather than the session.
Toyota Center
Downtown
In the middle of downtown with garages on several sides and light rail alongside, which takes a useful share of the crowd. One of the more manageable arenas to leave. We still work from an agreed point a couple of blocks out rather than the doors.
Minute Maid Park
Downtown
On the northern edge of downtown with good road access and its own parking. Close enough to the convention centre that a game and a show together fill the eastern downtown streets. Otherwise among the easier ballparks we work anywhere.
NRG Stadium
NRG Park
South of the Medical Center in a very large park with enormous surface lots, which helps enormously — there are genuine staging positions a short walk from the gates. The constraint is the sheer number of vehicles leaving at once onto the 610 and the 288.
Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo
NRG Park
Three weeks at NRG Park each spring, with a concert most nights and attendance that dwarfs anything else in the region. Traffic patterns around the whole southern side of the city change for the duration. We plan Rodeo bookings as an operation and advise on timing before the day rather than on it.
Wortham Theater Center
Theater District
In the downtown theatre district by Buffalo Bayou, with several houses nearby that finish close together. Opera and ballet performances run long. The garage beneath is the practical answer and we use it rather than the street.
Jones Hall
Theater District
On Louisiana Street in the same district, sharing the simultaneous-curtain problem with the Wortham and the Hobby Center a few blocks away. Three venues emptying together is a downtown departure worth staging for. We check the calendar rather than the clock.
Hobby Center
Theater District
At the western end of the theatre district by Tranquillity Park, with its own garage and reasonable access. Musicals here draw a large family audience and the departure is heavy but orderly. The garage exit is the constraint rather than the streets.
Getting to the Houston venues
Door to venue, ordinary conditions. The right-hand column means an event night; Rodeo evenings at NRG are worse than that and we plan them separately.
| Route | Approx. distance | Off-peak | Allow on an event night |
|---|---|---|---|
| Downtown to the George R. Brown | 1 mile | 5–10 min | 15–30 min |
| Downtown to Toyota Center | 1 mile | 5–10 min | 20–35 min |
| Downtown to NRG Stadium | 8 miles | 15–20 min | 45–80 min |
| Uptown to NRG Stadium | 9 miles | 18–25 min | 45–80 min |
| Downtown to the Theater District | 1 mile | 5–10 min | 15–30 min |
How Houston event work is priced
Event transfers are quoted per route, and event nights are usually better booked hourly — a performance or a concert does not end to a timetable. All of it is quoted per route and confirmed in writing before you travel, with no surge pricing at any hour.
For Rodeo season and the large energy conferences, book early. Those weeks commit most of the vehicles in the city and a late booking is a very different proposition from an early one.
