DCA vs Dulles vs BWI: Best DC Airport for Business

Reagan National, Dulles or BWI? Which DC airport suits K Street, Capitol Hill, Tysons, Arlington and Baltimore, with drive times and security tips.

For downtown DC, K Street, Capitol Hill and Arlington, Reagan National (DCA) is almost always the fastest airport, typically 15 to 20 minutes from downtown off-peak. Dulles (IAD) is the better choice for Tysons, Reston and most long-haul international flights, and BWI makes sense for Baltimore, the Maryland suburbs between the two cities, and fares or nonstops the other airports do not offer.

Here is how we approach the choice when we book chauffeured airport transfers in the Washington region, including typical drive times and the security and scheduling issues that are specific to DC.

DCA vs IAD vs BWI at a glance

AirportBest forTypical drive to downtown (off-peak / peak)Keep in mind
Reagan National (DCA)Downtown, K Street, Capitol Hill, Georgetown, Arlington, Crystal City and National Landing15–20 min / 30–45 minMostly domestic; a federal perimeter rule limits most nonstop flights to shorter distances
Dulles (IAD)Tysons, Reston, Herndon, the Dulles corridor, international flights40–50 min / 70–100 minLonger walk and train ride from gate to curb
BWI MarshallBaltimore, Columbia, Fort Meade, Annapolis area, Southwest-heavy schedules45–60 min / 75–105 minLong ride to downtown DC; better for Maryland

These are typical door-to-curb ranges from our Washington DC airport transfer guide. Traffic, weather, road closures and motorcades all move them, so treat them as planning ranges.

Reagan National: the downtown airport

DCA sits in Arlington, about five miles from downtown, right across the Potomac. For meetings on K Street, at the White House end of downtown, on Capitol Hill or in Crystal City and National Landing, nothing else comes close. Even at peak times the ride downtown is usually shorter than an off-peak ride from Dulles or BWI.

The airport has two terminals: Terminal 1, the historic building, and Terminal 2, which serves most airlines and concourses. It is compact, and the walk from gate to curb is short, which is why DCA is a favorite for same-day trips.

The catch is range. A federal perimeter rule limits most nonstop flights at DCA to destinations within about 1,250 miles, with a limited number of exemptions, and there is little international service. For the West Coast or overseas, you will often be looking at Dulles.

Dulles: international flights and the Dulles corridor

Dulles is about 26 miles west of downtown and is the region’s main long-haul international airport and a United hub. It is also the natural airport for Tysons, Reston and Herndon, where many consulting, technology and government-contracting firms are based. Tysons is about 13 miles away, typically 20 to 25 minutes off-peak and 35 to 55 minutes at peak.

Plan for time inside the airport. The main terminal connects to the midfield concourses by train, so the walk from gate to curb is longer than many travelers expect, and international arrivals must clear immigration and customs first. Your 60 minutes of free waiting time starts after you land, and we track your flight, so you do not need to rush.

BWI: the Maryland option

BWI Marshall sits just south of Baltimore, about 32 miles from downtown DC. It is the obvious choice for Baltimore, Columbia, Fort Meade and the Annapolis area, and it has extensive Southwest Airlines service, which can mean nonstops or fares that DCA and IAD do not offer. For downtown Washington it is usually the longest ride of the three, so it is worth comparing total door-to-door time, not just the fare.

Federal security and early departures

Washington has traffic variables that other cities do not. Motorcades, security perimeters, protests and major events can close streets downtown and on Capitol Hill with little notice, and parts of the area around the Capitol and the National Mall do not allow curbside stopping. Your chauffeur plans alternate routes before setting off and drops you at the nearest reliably accessible point to your building’s entrance, which we confirm on the day for security-sensitive locations.

For departures, build in margin. Allow extra time for Dulles, where the train to your concourse adds to the walk, and for any departure during weekday rush hours, when the roads to all three airports slow. If you are heading to a federal building before a flight, remember that visitor screening can take time, and pad your schedule accordingly.

Where your chauffeur meets you

Our default is a meet-and-greet inside the terminal, with your chauffeur waiting near baggage claim with a name sign and then walking you to the vehicle. Each airport assigns specific curbs or areas to pre-arranged cars, and at some of them the car waits in a garage or on an outer curb rather than at the terminal door, so your confirmation includes your chauffeur’s contact details and the meeting point for your terminal.

Practical tips for business travelers

  • Default to DCA for downtown and Arlington if your route is domestic and your airline flies there.
  • Pick Dulles for Tysons and Reston, and for international travel.
  • Consider BWI for Baltimore and Maryland, and compare door-to-door time before booking it for downtown DC.
  • Choose the right vehicle. The Executive Sedan takes 3 passengers and 3 bags; the Executive SUV takes 6 and 6.
  • Book hourly for multi-stop days, such as a morning on Capitol Hill and an afternoon in Tysons.
  • Keep plans flexible. Cancellation is free up to 2 hours before pickup.
