MIA vs Fort Lauderdale: Best Miami Airport for Business

MIA or Fort Lauderdale? Which airport suits Brickell, Miami Beach, Coral Gables, Doral, Aventura and Boca Raton, with drive times and seasonal tips.

For Brickell, Downtown, Coral Gables, Doral and Miami Beach, Miami International (MIA) is usually the better airport: Brickell is typically 15 to 25 minutes away off-peak, against 40 to 50 minutes from Fort Lauderdale. For Aventura, Sunny Isles, Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood (FLL) is often quicker door to door and easier to be collected from. Private flights usually use Opa-locka Executive on the Miami side or Fort Lauderdale Executive in Broward.

Here is how we look at the choice when we book chauffeured airport transfers across South Florida, with typical drive-time ranges and what changes in season.

MIA vs FLL at a glance

Drive-time ranges are typical door-to-curb figures from our Miami airport transfer guide, in ordinary conditions outside season. They vary with weather, events, construction and incidents, so use them for planning rather than as guarantees.

Miami International: the international gateway

MIA is the region’s international gateway, and the airport says it offers more flights to Latin America and the Caribbean than any other U.S. airport. It has three connected terminals, North (Concourse D), Central (Concourses E, F and G) and South (Concourses H and J), and for pickups they behave almost like separate airports, so we confirm your concourse against your flight number. Latin American arrivals bunch heavily in the evening, customs can run long and the arrivals roadway is difficult at peak, which is why meeting inside is our default here.

For Brickell, Downtown, Coral Gables, Coconut Grove and Doral, MIA is the natural choice, and it is the closer airport for Miami Beach as well. Beach trips cross one of the causeways over Biscayne Bay, and the causeway is often the slowest part of the journey, so we time beach pickups with that in mind.

Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood: easier for Broward and the north

Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood is compact, with four terminals, and its arrivals level is far easier to work than MIA’s. For anyone staying in Aventura, Sunny Isles, Hollywood, Fort Lauderdale or Boca Raton, it is frequently the quicker airport end to end, and the fare difference rarely covers the extra ground time from MIA. The two airports are about 27 miles apart by road, typically 35 to 45 minutes off-peak and 60 to 90 minutes at peak.

The trade-off is range. FLL has fewer long-haul international options than MIA, so for many Latin American and European trips your route will decide the airport for you.

Season, events and the causeways

South Florida traffic is seasonal in a way few American markets are. From roughly December to April the same journey takes noticeably longer, and during Art Basel, the boat shows and the big tennis and motor-racing weeks the region stops behaving like a normal city. The ranges above assume ordinary rush hour, not an event week; in season we start earlier and tell you why. Vehicles are also committed well ahead of the date during those weeks, so book as soon as your plans firm up. Some expressway routes carry tolls, and those on your quoted route are included in your written quote.

Opa-locka, FXE and private aviation

For private flights, Miami-Opa locka Executive Airport (OPF), run by the Miami-Dade Aviation Department as a reliever to MIA, is the main field for Miami itself. It is well placed for Aventura, the beaches and north Miami-Dade: Aventura is typically 18 to 25 minutes away off-peak and Brickell 25 to 35 minutes. Fort Lauderdale Executive (FXE), which the City of Fort Lauderdale owns and describes as one of the busiest general-aviation airports in the country, is the natural choice for Broward, with Las Olas typically 12 to 18 minutes away off-peak. Miami Executive in the south and Boca Raton to the north are other options. Give us your tail number and FBO when you book: we track the aircraft and meet you planeside where the operator allows it. Our Miami private aviation page has more detail.

Where your chauffeur meets you

Our default is a meet-and-greet: your chauffeur waits inside near baggage claim with a name sign, then walks you to the car. At MIA, ground transportation is on the first (arrivals) level outside the terminal, and Miami-Dade requires limousine service to be pre-arranged; at FLL, pre-arranged cars use designated areas on the lower-level (arrivals) curb. International arrivals clear immigration and customs first; your 60 minutes of free waiting time starts when you land, and we monitor the flight, so a slow customs line does not mean a missed pickup. Because we cover both airports, weather that sends a Miami arrival to Fort Lauderdale means a re-planned pickup, not a new booking.

Practical tips for business travelers

  • Pick by where you are staying. Brickell, Coral Gables, Doral or the beaches: MIA. Aventura and anywhere north: check FLL first.
  • Book early in season. From December to April, and especially around Art Basel and the boat shows, reserve as soon as your dates are set.
  • Leave margin for the causeways. For a Miami Beach departure at rush hour, build in extra time beyond what a map app shows.
  • Choose the right vehicle. The Executive Sedan takes 3 passengers and 3 bags; the Executive SUV takes 6 and 6.
  • Keep plans flexible. Cancellation is free up to 2 hours before pickup.
