Hyde Park is further from the Loop than visitors expect, and the medical district west of downtown is four major institutions sharing one set of approaches. Chicago’s academic and medical work is steady rather than seasonal, and a good deal of it recurs — visiting faculty, candidates, trustees and patients travelling on a schedule. The campuses here are genuinely spread out, from Hyde Park in the south to Evanston in the north, and the distances are larger than a downtown-centric map suggests. We confirm the building and the entrance rather than accepting the institution name.
Universities and medical campuses. The universities and the medical district generate constant academic, research and patient travel, and the campuses are large enough that the street address alone will frequently put a vehicle at the wrong gate.
University of Chicago
Hyde Park
In Hyde Park on the South Side, considerably further from the Loop than visitors assume and best reached by Lake Shore Drive rather than the surface streets. A large quadrangle campus where the building genuinely matters. Midway is the closer airport by a clear margin.
Northwestern University
Evanston
On the lakefront in Evanston, north of the city and a real journey from downtown at peak. The campus is open and pleasant to work outside term-start week. Home football weekends fill the northern approaches and are worth naming at booking.
Booth School of Business
Hyde Park & the Loop
Operates from Hyde Park and from a downtown building on Wacker, and the two are a genuine journey apart. Executive programmes run downtown while much of the academic calendar sits in Hyde Park, so confirming which campus is the single most useful thing at booking.
DePaul University
Lincoln Park & the Loop
Also split between two sites — Lincoln Park and a Loop campus on State Street. The Lincoln Park streets are narrow and residential with limited stopping; the Loop campus has all the difficulties of a downtown address. Different problems, same booking question.
Loyola University Chicago
Rogers Park
On the lakefront in Rogers Park at the far north of the city, with a second campus in Streeterville for the health sciences. The northern site is a long run from either airport and we quote it as a transfer rather than a local hop.
Illinois Institute of Technology
Bronzeville
On the near South Side close to the expressway, which makes it one of the easier campuses here to reach from both airports. Compact and well signposted. Close enough to Guaranteed Rate Field that a game night affects the approach.
Northwestern Memorial Hospital
Streeterville
In Streeterville among a cluster of Northwestern medical buildings, with different entrances for different services and constant traffic on the surrounding streets. The entrance depends on the appointment rather than the address, and we confirm it before the day.
Rush University Medical Center
Illinois Medical District
In the medical district west of downtown, where several major institutions share one set of approaches and queue together at shift change. Rush has its own access off the expressway, which is the better route in and not the obvious one.
Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s
Streeterville
On Chicago Avenue in Streeterville with a dedicated family entrance and a drop-off designed for the job. Parents travelling with children and equipment are a large part of this work, and the vehicle matters as much as the route. Better booked hourly on treatment days.
University of Illinois Chicago
Illinois Medical District
A large campus on the near West Side adjoining the medical district and sharing its traffic. The site spans both sides of the expressway, so the half of campus you need decides the approach entirely. We confirm which side before dispatching.
To the Chicago campuses
Door to campus, ordinary conditions. Hyde Park and Evanston sit at opposite ends of the city, and a day touching both is an hourly booking rather than two transfers.
