The Chicago hotels we run to

Michigan Avenue is a poor place to stop and an excellent place to stay. The two facts are reconciled on the side streets. Chicago’s executive hotels sit along the Magnificent Mile, through River North and in the Loop, and most of them have proper forecourts — this is an easier city to work than its size suggests. The exceptions are the houses fronting directly onto Michigan Avenue, where stopping is enforced and a pickup half a block along a cross street is both quicker and calmer. We agree that point at booking rather than leaving it to the chauffeur on the day.

These are the addresses people actually give a chauffeur in Chicago. The grid makes the city easier to work than most — right up until a bridge goes up or a convention fills the south side of downtown.

Where visiting executives stay. The River North and Magnificent Mile properties hold most of the visiting corporate traffic, with the Loop houses serving the financial and legal business and the West Loop taking the newer technology work.

The Peninsula Chicago

Magnificent Mile

On Superior just off Michigan, which gives it a side-street entrance rather than an avenue one — a real advantage here. The forecourt handles vehicles well at peak checkout and the staff are used to chauffeured departures. One of the most straightforward luxury pickups in the city.

  • Side-street entrance
  • Reliable forecourt

Four Seasons Chicago

Magnificent Mile

In the 900 North Michigan building with its arrival level set above the street, reached by a dedicated approach rather than the avenue itself. It works well once you know it and badly if you do not. We use the correct entrance rather than circling.

  • Elevated arrival level
  • Dedicated approach

Waldorf Astoria Chicago

Gold Coast

On Walton in the Gold Coast, tucked into a quiet block with a courtyard entrance that is genuinely easy to work. Away from the Michigan Avenue congestion entirely, which makes an early O’Hare departure from here less fraught than from the avenue houses.

  • Courtyard entrance
  • Quiet block
  • Easy early departures

The Langham Chicago

River North

In the Mies van der Rohe building on Wacker overlooking the river, with a proper covered entrance off the main flow. Wacker itself is fast-moving and unforgiving of a stopped vehicle, so the forecourt matters more here than at most properties.

  • Riverside
  • Covered entrance
  • Wacker is unforgiving

The Drake

Gold Coast

At the top of the Magnificent Mile where Michigan meets Lake Shore Drive, a junction that is busy at every hour. The hotel entrance is on Walton rather than the avenue, which is the detail that makes it workable. Close to Oak Street Beach and the lakefront path.

  • Walton Street entrance
  • Busy junction

Chicago Athletic Association

The Loop

On Michigan facing Millennium Park, in the middle of the stretch where stopping is least practical. We work from Madison or Monroe a few steps away rather than attempting the avenue, and on event days at the park we move further out still.

  • Faces Millennium Park
  • Cross-street pickup

Pendry Chicago

Magnificent Mile

In the Carbide and Carbon building on Michigan, a landmark with a narrow frontage and no real forecourt to speak of. The side street is the answer. Well positioned for both the Loop and River North, which makes it a sensible base for a split day.

  • Narrow frontage
  • Side-street pickup
  • Central for split days

The St. Regis Chicago

Lakeshore East

In Lakeshore East, east of Michigan and reached by a road layout that is genuinely confusing on a first visit — there are streets on three levels here. The building has proper vehicle access once you are on the right one. We plan the approach rather than trusting a mapping application.

  • Multi-level streets
  • Plan the approach

Viceroy Chicago

Gold Coast

On Cedar in the Gold Coast, a small quiet street where a brief stop is straightforward. Among the easier pickups in this part of the city. A short run to the Magnificent Mile and a comfortable one out to the Kennedy for O’Hare.

  • Quiet street
  • Straightforward stop

Thompson Chicago

Gold Coast

On Dearborn Parkway, residential and calm, with the kind of access that makes an early departure simple. Its position just west of the lakefront means the run to either airport starts well rather than beginning with ten minutes of avenue traffic.

  • Residential street
  • Good airport start

From the Chicago hotel districts to the airports

Door to kerb, ordinary conditions. The Loop is materially closer to Midway and the Gold Coast marginally closer to O’Hare, which is worth knowing when the flights are booked.

How Chicago hotel transfers are priced

Hotel transfers are quoted per route and confirmed in writing before you travel, with no surge pricing at any hour. Hourly hire suits a day that begins and ends at the hotel with several stops between, which downtown parking rates make the economical choice more often than people expect.

In winter we start earlier from every one of these addresses. That is built into the quoted pickup time rather than added as a surcharge on the day.
