JFK vs LaGuardia vs Newark: Best NYC Airport for Business

JFK, LaGuardia, Newark or Teterboro? Which New York airport suits Midtown, Downtown, New Jersey and Westchester, with drive times and pickup tips.

For Midtown and the East Side, LaGuardia is usually the fastest airport to reach, JFK is the default for long-haul international flights, and Newark is often the better pick for the West Side, Lower Manhattan and New Jersey. Teterboro is the private-aviation answer for Midtown and North Jersey. Which one wins on a given day depends less on distance than on the hour you land and which river crossings sit between you and your meeting.

Below is how we think about the choice when we book chauffeured airport transfers across the New York area, along with realistic drive-time ranges and what to expect at each airport when you land.

The short version: match the airport to where you are going

AirportBest forTypical drive to Midtown (off-peak / peak)Watch out for
LaGuardia (LGA)Midtown East, Upper East Side, Queens, Westchester, domestic flights30–40 min / 60–80 minGrand Central Parkway and RFK Bridge backups
JFKLong-haul international, Brooklyn, Long Island, Queens50–65 min / 80–110 minVan Wyck Expressway, ongoing terminal construction
Newark (EWR)Hudson Yards, West Side, Lower Manhattan, Jersey City, northern and central New Jersey45–60 min / 75–100 minLincoln and Holland Tunnel queues, cross-state pricing
Teterboro (TEB)Private and charter flights, Bergen County, Midtown via the Lincoln Tunnel or George Washington BridgeVaries with crossing and time of dayNo commercial airline service; confirm the FBO

Drive times are typical door-to-curb ranges from our New York airport transfer guide. They vary with weather, events, construction and incidents, so treat them as planning ranges rather than promises.

LaGuardia: closest to Midtown, best for domestic trips

LaGuardia sits in northern Queens, and for most of Midtown East, the Upper East Side and the Plaza District it is the shortest ride of the three. The rebuilt airport now runs through two main terminals: Terminal B, used by most airlines, and Terminal C, which is Delta’s. The historic Marine Air Terminal, now Terminal A, handles a small number of flights.

LaGuardia also works well for Westchester and southern Connecticut, since the Whitestone and Throgs Neck bridges and the Hutchinson River Parkway connect the airport directly to the north without going through Manhattan. If you are headed to White Plains, Purchase or Rye, LaGuardia is usually the natural choice for domestic flights, although Westchester County Airport (HPN) is closer still if your airline flies there.

The limitation is range. LaGuardia is primarily a domestic airport, so most international trips will route you through JFK or Newark anyway.

JFK: the international gateway, mid-rebuild

JFK is where most long-haul international flights land, and for Brooklyn, eastern Queens and Long Island it is often the closest major airport. For Manhattan it is the longest ride, because the Van Wyck Expressway and the approaches to the Midtown Tunnel and the bridges are some of the most congested roads in the city at peak hours.

JFK is also in the middle of a major redevelopment, so terminal assignments are changing. The new Terminal 6 has begun opening in phases, Terminal 7 is being wound down as airlines move out, and New Terminal One is being built to replace the current Terminal 1 in phases. Always check your airline’s terminal on the day of travel rather than relying on where it was last trip. We confirm the terminal against your flight number before your chauffeur heads out.

For international arrivals, clearing immigration and customs can add a meaningful amount of time. Because we track your flight and your 60 minutes of free waiting time starts after you land, a long customs queue does not mean a missed pickup.

Newark: often the smarter choice for the West Side and New Jersey

Newark Liberty is in New Jersey, but for Hudson Yards, Chelsea, the West Village, Tribeca and the Financial District it can be competitive with, and sometimes quicker than, JFK. It is the obvious choice if your meetings are in Jersey City, Hoboken, Newark or the corporate corridors of northern and central New Jersey. Newark is United’s major New York hub, which makes it a strong option for nonstop domestic and international flights.

Newark has three terminals: the new Terminal A, which opened in 2023, plus Terminals B and C. Trips into Manhattan rely on the Lincoln or Holland Tunnel, and tunnel queues are the main source of variability. Because Newark rides cross a state line, they are priced as cross-state trips, and the difference appears in your written quote before you book.

Teterboro: private aviation for Midtown and North Jersey

Teterboro, in Bergen County, New Jersey, is the region’s main business-aviation airport and has no scheduled airline service. Flights arrive at fixed-base operators (FBOs) rather than terminals, and your chauffeur can be waiting planeside or at the FBO lobby, depending on the operator’s rules. Tell us your tail number and FBO when you book so we can track the flight and coordinate with the FBO directly. From Teterboro, Midtown is reached through the Lincoln Tunnel or across the George Washington Bridge, and the better route depends on the hour.

How congestion pricing affects your ride

New York’s Congestion Relief Zone covers Manhattan at and below 60th Street, excluding the FDR Drive and the West Side Highway. For-hire vehicles, including black cars, pay a per-trip surcharge when a trip enters, leaves or travels within the zone, and New York State congestion surcharges also apply to for-hire trips in much of Manhattan.

In practice, almost every airport run to or from Midtown or Downtown will include these charges. Our New York quotes include New York sales tax, the Black Car Fund and applicable congestion surcharges, along with a 20% chauffeur gratuity and known airport fees, so the number you see is the number you pay. There is no surge pricing at any hour.

Where your chauffeur meets you

At all three commercial airports, our default is a meet-and-greet: your chauffeur waits inside the arrivals area, usually near baggage claim, with a name sign, then walks you to the vehicle at the airport’s designated pickup area for pre-arranged cars. At LaGuardia, for example, pre-arranged pickups at Terminal B use the parking garage rather than the terminal curb, while Terminal C uses a designated lane on the arrivals level. Curbside rules at New York airports are strictly enforced, which is why we do not rely on circling pickups. Your confirmation includes your chauffeur’s contact details and the meeting point for your terminal.

Practical tips for business travelers

  • Choose by destination, not habit. If your first meeting is at Hudson Yards, compare Newark fares before defaulting to JFK.
  • Avoid peak landing windows when you can. Weekday afternoons and early evenings routinely push rides toward the upper end of the ranges above.
  • Book an Executive SUV for groups or luggage. The Executive Sedan takes 3 passengers and 3 bags; the Executive SUV takes 6 and 6.
  • Allow margin on departures. For JFK and Newark departures from Manhattan at rush hour, build in extra time beyond what a map app shows.
  • Plans change? Cancellation is free up to 2 hours before pickup.

Executive Black Car books, prices, dispatches and invoices every ride; the driving is done by vetted independent chauffeur operators who work New York’s roads every day. Quick answers

Which New York airport is closest to Midtown Manhattan?

LaGuardia is usually the quickest airport to reach from Midtown, typically 30 to 40 minutes off-peak and 60 to 80 minutes at peak times. Times vary with traffic, weather and events.

Is Newark or JFK better for Lower Manhattan and the West Side?

Newark is often competitive with or faster than JFK for Hudson Yards, the West Side and the Financial District, because it avoids the Van Wyck Expressway. Tunnel traffic is the main variable, so check the time of day you land.

Do black car rides to Manhattan pay the congestion charge?

Yes. For-hire vehicles pay a per-trip surcharge for trips in Manhattan at and below 60th Street, and state congestion surcharges also apply. Executive Black Car’s New York quotes include these charges up front.

How long will my chauffeur wait at a New York airport?

Your chauffeur tracks your flight and waits 60 minutes free after you land, which covers most baggage and customs delays. At non-airport pickups the free wait is 15 minutes.
